Don’t Waste Your Time With These “Beauty Products”

Oral collagen supplements have been very popular for a few years now.  We see collagen labeled on a bottle with pretty marketing, and we’re tossing it in our carts.  Are these collagen supplements really helping us build more collagen in our facial region, or not?

Is Oral Collagen Worth The Hype?

The short answer is no.  Collagen is a protein in our body found in the deepest layer of the skin.  Known as the dermis, this layer gives our skin support, strength and plays an important role in tissue repair.

There are many different types of collagen in our bodies.  Collagen is not only in our skin, but our connective tissue (bone, cartilage, ligaments, tendons) and our smooth muscles as well.

Fibroblasts are the cells that produce proteins to aid in the production of collagen and elastin. They use amino acids and certain vitamins and minerals to create collagen.  The amino acids then turn to peptides then proteins.

When you ingest a collagen supplement, your body breaks it down into amino acids, which it then sends throughout the blood stream.  Your body doesn’t know these amino acids came from collagen.  They could just as easily be from beans, nuts, seeds.  As amino acids circulate around the blood stream, they will bind to where they are needed.

For example, if you were recently injured, amino acids will go straight to repair your ligaments or tendons.
You can’t just direct them to your skin.  While studies show collagen supplements are beneficial for joint health, there’s not much pointing to improved skin.

If you’re looking for a “beauty juice,” a good ol’ green smoothie or juice is the way to go.   Remember beauty doesn’t just come from ingesting vitamins, it also comes from mental health, diet, exercise, proper skincare, and lifestyle.

With Love,

Nicole
