Worst Skincare Mistakes

The internet is flooded with miss information about skincare, from TikTokers to Instagram. Here are some of the worse skincare mistakes I’ve seen on the internet you should avoid making.

Worst Skincare Mistake #1

“Do not wash your face in the shower because the water is too hot.” Of  course, you can wash your face in the shower! However, you never want to shower in hot water because you not only have skin on your face but the rest of your body.

Showering in hot water only further strips the natural oils from your skin.  It doesn’t matter if you wash your face in the shower or not. What matters is you’re not using hot water every time you shower. As well as taking long hot showers. The longer the shower, the more oils you’re stripping so knock it off!

Worst Skincare Mistake #2

“Mix your products before applying them.” You never want to do this, especially with active ingredients.  The problem with this is that it doesn’t create an even layer on the skin, instead a patchy application.

Especially if you’re doing this with retinol and a moisturizer, the retinol will concentrate in certain areas more than others, and you won’t be using it to its full potential.  The best way to layer skincare products is to let the first one dry and then apply the next.

Worst Skincare Mistake #3

“Cleanse your face morning and night.” This is not a set skincare rule.  If you have dry skin, sensitive skin, or experiencing irritation to a product you have been using, you don’t NEED to wash your face in the morning.

If you’re oily, you may find you wake up feeling like a grease monkey…I can relate. If this is the case cleanse then sis.  But those I mentioned before don’t need to cleanse in the morning. This will further strip their natural oils they are trying so hard to keep balanced.

The only time you MUST cleanse your face is before you go to sleep.  The last thing you want to do is go to bed with makeup, dirt, and pollutants on your face from the day. Take a peep at my post, Esthetician’s Guide To PM Skincare Routine, for helpful nighttime skincare tips.

Worst Skincare Mistake #4

“Use a facial steamer to open up your pores” First off, your pores do not open and close. I see this continually being said all over the internet, and it makes me want to scream.

Although they can be relaxing, facial steamers are not great for the skin. Facial steamers used in spas are so old school and should be a thing of the past.  Using steam on the face softens the top layer of skin, allowing deeper penetration of ingredients.  However, this also increases transepidermal water loss, aka losing water out of your skin.

Transepidermal water loss increases dryness and irritation.  This makes your skin look dull, enhancing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

If you are using a retinol or retinoid, deeper penetration of these ingredients is a no-no. This will be exceptionally irritating and temporarily weaken your skin barrier.

Steam on the skin dilates your blood vessels, worsening redness.  There’s an increase in inflammation with redness, which can immediately trigger a rosacea flare, acne, and other skin diseases associated with inflammation.

Steam is not suitable for people with melasma, as this condition worsens with heat on the skin. It’s overall not a good idea, and I would advise you to stay clear of facial steamers.

Lastly, not applying an SPF at the end of your skincare routine.  There are hundreds if not thousands of YouTube videos of influencers and celebrities showing off their skincare routines and not following up with an SPF during the day.

Without sunscreen, all your treatment serums and creams are useless.  The sun is the biggest contributing factor to premature aging.  If you want to preserve healthy, youthful skin as long as possible, load up on the SPF girlfriend.  Check out my other blog post, “ Why You Should Wear Sunscreen Every Day,” to find the best SPF for your skin type!
